Stereo TRS — When You Need More Than a Mono Jack

Most electric guitars use a standard mono TS (Tip-Sleeve) output jack — but certain wiring configurations require a stereo TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) jack. The most common application is active electronics with battery switching — where the ring contact is used to complete the battery circuit when a cable is plugged in, automatically disconnecting the battery when unplugged to preserve battery life.
