Football-Style vs Flat Jack Plate
Output jack plates come in several profiles depending on the guitar's body routing and aesthetic. The football-style (also called curved or oval) jack plate is a recessed, curved plate that sits flush with the guitar body contour — the jack is mounted in the centre of the plate, recessed slightly below the body surface. This provides a cleaner look than a flat plate and helps protect the jack from accidental side impacts. The football shape is commonly associated with Les Paul-style and SG-style guitars, as well as many other solid-body electrics that use a side-mounted output jack.
