If your guitar feels stiff to play or your fingers ache after a short session, high action is likely the culprit. The good news? You can fix it at home with the right knowledge and a few basic tools.
What Is Guitar Action?
Guitar action refers to the distance between your strings and the fretboard. High action makes the guitar harder to play — you need to press harder, which causes fatigue and intonation issues. Low action makes playing effortless, though going too low causes fret buzz.
Tools You'll Need
- Allen key / hex wrench set
- String action gauge ruler
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat head)
- Capo (optional)
Step 1: Measure Your Current Action
Use a string action gauge at the 12th fret. Ideal action measurements:
- Electric guitar (low E): 1.5mm – 2.0mm
- Electric guitar (high e): 1.0mm – 1.5mm
- Acoustic guitar (low E): 2.0mm – 2.5mm
- Acoustic guitar (high e): 1.5mm – 2.0mm
Step 2: Check the Neck Relief
Before touching the saddle, check your truss rod. Press down the 1st and 12th fret simultaneously — there should be a slight gap at the 7th fret (about 0.3mm). Too much bow means the truss rod needs tightening first.
Step 3: Adjust the Saddle Height
For electric guitars (tune-o-matic or strat-style): Use the Allen key to turn the saddle height screws counter-clockwise to lower action. Do it in small increments — a quarter turn at a time.
For acoustic guitars: The saddle needs to be removed and sanded down at the base. Take it slow — you can always remove more material but can't add it back.
Step 4: Check Nut Height
If open strings buzz but fretted notes are fine, the nut slots may be too low. If open strings feel stiff compared to higher frets, the nut may be too high. Nut filing is more advanced — consider bringing it to a tech.
Step 5: Re-tune and Test
After every adjustment, retune and play through all positions on the neck. Check for fret buzz and intonation. Make small adjustments until it feels right.
